Privacy Policy

How the TabTerrace Chrome extension and website handle your data.

Last updated: 2026-10-26

This policy covers the TabTerrace Chrome extension and the website at tabterrace.com.

In short: TabTerrace keeps your data in your own browser. We don't have accounts, we don't run servers that receive your browsing data or anything you create in the extension, and we never sell, rent or share your data. There are no ads and no analytics in the extension.

Data the extension stores

Everything below is stored by Chrome on your device (chrome.storage):

  • Grids, split views and their history — the address and title of each page, the layout, and the names and tags you give them.
  • Favorites, quick links and tags. These use chrome.storage.sync, so if Chrome sync is on, Google syncs them between your own devices under your Google account.
  • To-dos, notes, important dates, timers and settings — such as language, background and module layout.
  • Background images you upload — kept only on this device; never synced or backed up.

None of this is sent to us. Uninstalling the extension removes its local data. You can also delete individual items at any time inside the extension.

Permissions and why we need them

  • Read and change data on all websites (<all_urls>, declarativeNetRequest) — to show a website inside a grid cell, the extension removes the response headers that block embedding (X-Frame-Options, Content-Security-Policy: frame-ancestors). This rule applies only to the grid tab, never to the rest of your browsing. Small scripts run inside grid cells to keep sites from breaking out of the grid and to tell the grid each cell's address and title. The extension does not read, collect or transmit the content of the pages you visit.
  • Tabs and tab groups (tabs, tabGroups) — to merge the tabs you choose into a grid, restore them, and open Chrome split view.
  • Storage (storage) — to save the data listed above.
  • Context menus (contextMenus) — for "Put this page in a grid" and "Open link in a grid".
  • Site icons (favicon) — to show website icons using Chrome's built-in favicon service.
  • Location (geolocation) — used only when you choose Use current location for weather. Coordinates are rounded to two decimal places (about 1 km) and sent to Open-Meteo to get a forecast. They are not sent anywhere else.
  • Identity (identity) — used only when you connect Google Drive backup.
  • Notifications, alarms and offscreen documents (notifications, alarms, offscreen) — for countdown and match reminders, focus timers, radio and ambient sounds.

Google Drive backup (optional)

If you turn it on, the extension signs in with your Google account using only the drive.file scope. This scope lets the extension see only the files it created, in a visible "TabTerrace Backup" folder in your own Google Drive. Backups go directly from your browser to Google and never pass through our servers. We cannot see your backups. You can turn backup off at any time and revoke access in your Google Account's third-party connections.

Limited Use. TabTerrace's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Information from Google Drive is used only to back up and restore your own TabTerrace data, at your request. It is not used for advertising, not sold, not transferred to anyone else, and not read by people.

Third-party services the extension contacts

Some features load content directly from public services. These requests come from your browser, so each service sees your IP address and the request itself, as with any website you visit. Each one is used only when you open or turn on the feature that needs it.

  • Weather — Open-Meteo (forecast and city search).
  • Holidays — Nager.Date, and the open-source holiday-cn data on GitHub for mainland China.
  • Match schedule — NBA schedules from data.tabterrace.com (static files hosted on GitHub Pages; the request contains no personal data), and openfootball schedules on GitHub.
  • Currency rates — ExchangeRate-API (open.er-api.com).
  • Backgrounds — Bing image of the day; public webcam snapshots from GeoNet (New Zealand), NOAA (United States) and Taiwan's Ministry of Environment.
  • Radio — the Radio Browser directory and the stations you play.
  • TV and video — the sources you add: iptv-org and Free-TV channel lists, Internet Archive, NASA Image and Video Library, Wikimedia Commons, and playlists or video links you enter.
  • Search — the search engine you choose (for example Google, Bing or DuckDuckGo), only when you search.
  • Websites you put in a grid — loaded normally from those websites, under their own privacy policies.

Chrome Web Store User Data Policy

The use of information received through the extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not collect personal information, browsing history, website content, location, or anything you create in TabTerrace, and we do not use or transfer user data for advertising, creditworthiness, or any purpose unrelated to the features described above.

The website

tabterrace.com is an information site with no accounts or advertising. The website uses Plausible, with statistics sent to click.pageview.click, to understand how the site is used through aggregate information such as pages viewed, referral sources, and browser or device types. This analytics does not use cookies or collect content saved in the extension. Separately, the website remembers your language (a cookie), your language recommendation choice and light or dark theme (local storage) in your browser so pages show the way you chose and language suggestions do not repeat.

Children

TabTerrace is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will post the new version on this page and update the date above.
